An Early Sunset

It was dark
and I was driving
home.
I saw a man
on the side of
the road
when I was stopped
by a timed red light.
He was wearing a suit
with a haircut to match it.
He picked up a sign
with a red balloon
attached
to
the
top.
I know how cruel this may sound,
I hoped the sign read
something like,
“need money for food,”
as he looked quickly
at us.
But the sign was for
an open house.
He laid it to the ground
as he waited
for cars to pass
under a green light,
he popped that balloon
and pieces of red
fell
to
the
ground.

We all rushed by.
